A 61 year old woman came forward to see her daughter happy by lending her womb to carry her grandchild to term. This is the second incident in India, a woman giving birth to her grandchild.

According to the report of TNIE, a 27 year old woman had hysterectomy surgery following the complication of ‘placental abruption’ in the seventh month of her pregnancy two years ago immediately after her marriage.

“As she was bleeding profusely, doctors at the private hospital had to remove the foetus and perform hysterectomy (removal of uterus) to save the life of the young woman. This meant that she would not be able to conceive. But the couple wanted to have their own baby,” said Dr Jeyarani Kamaraj, director of the Akash Fertility Centre, who performed the procedure.

After a failure attempt to find a surrogate, the woman’s mother came forward after discussions at home. But, it was bit problematic to fertilization, as the sexagenarian had attained menopause years ago. Doctors first concentrated on bringing menstrual cycle by hormone therapy for four months. “Then, a healthy embryo fertilised through in vitro fertilisation procedure was implanted into the woman’s uterus,” Dr Jeyarani said.

The grandmother has saved nearly 4 lakhs to the baby’s biological parents. The procedure called surrogacy is really a boon for such couples. But, approaching poor women for borrowing their womb for money is a shame on motherhood.
