A 3-year-old girl in Connecticut lived alone with her mother’s corpse for several days in there with nothing to eat, but cereal, which was spilled on the floor.
According to authorities the 37-year-old mother was found dead in a bedroom of the East Harford home on Monday (March 13), when a social worker went to check on the girl, because she had not been to day care for several days.
Investigators could not exactly conclude for how long the girl had been living alone, but it was “definitely more than a couple of days”, Lt. Joshua Litwen said. The girl is dehydrated, but is expected to be fine, he said. The girl was brought to Children’s Medical Center in Hartford.
The names of the mother and daughter have not been released.
Police said they found no evidence of a crime or break-in. Investigators are awaiting results of an autopsy by the medical examiner’s office to see how the woman died.
Susan Tash, a neighbor said that the television in the mother’s apartment was very loud over the last week, and heard the girl scream and cry. The neighbor thought that the child was being fussy.
“I was mortified,” Tash said after the woman’s body was found. “It hit me hard because the noise upstairs and I felt kind of responsible.”
The social worker who visited the apartment on Monday knocked on the door and got the girl to unlock it, Litwin said. The girl believed that her mother was sleeping, he added.
It was not immediately clear, who should get the child’s custody. The state Department of Children and Families was called in.
