ICE detains Connecticut Imam on deportation order May 23, 2017 06:12

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have detained the imam of a mosque in Connecticut on an outstanding deportation order, which was issued last year. The immigration authorities have identified the man as Hafiz Abdul Hannan, who is a native of Pakistan. The imam was taken into custody on Friday at his home in New Haven. Shawn Neudauer, a spokesperson for ICE said that an immigration judge handed down an order in March last year to deport Hannan. Neudauer said that "Hannan has a previous federal conviction for committing fraud in his immigration documents," "He will remain in ICE custody pending removal from the United States." In the website of Masjid Al-Islam, a mosque founded in 1987, Hannan is listed as imam. The executive director of the Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relation, Mongi Dhaouadi said that Hannan is a great community leader in the region and is widely beloved. "Everybody was shocked to see him being arrested only a few hours before the private prayers, a few days before the month of Ramadan, when the community is getting ready for this important holy month," Dhaouadi said. "And so obviously we're concerned about the choosing of the time by the authorities to execute this order." Hannan was initially detained in Hartford and then transferred to a facility in Boston, according to his family, Dhaouadi said. According to recent federal reports, ICE arrests are up 40% in the first 100 days of Trump’s administration, compared to the same period last year. The report also said that at least 75% of those arrested between January 22 and April 29 were convicted criminals. Donald Trump signed an executive order soon he took over the White House to crack down on illegal immigration with criminals as top most priority. But the immigrant advocacy groups are worried that other undocumented people, who are not criminals may also get swept in dragnets. The report also noted a “rise in non-criminal arrests over the same period, which increased from approximately in 2016 to more than 10,800 in 2017,” a spike of over 150%. Dean’s expression after Indian student touched his feet has gone viral May 22, 2017 13:09

Indians are praised around the world for their culture and ‘sanskars.’ They show a deep respect for elders and always seek for their blessings by a simple gesture by touching their feet. While the western countries are not well aware of this gesture, but what can Indians do about it. As they never hesitate to show their respect towards their elders and gurus. And people in western countries always go dumbstruck by this moment. An Indian student, who graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, out of sheer respect bowed down and touched his Dean’s feet after collecting his degree. This quite common in India, but the dean’s expression, who was shaking hands one second and the next, the student was touching his feet went over his head and the Dean’s expression is totally priceless. Chidambaram smartly admitted the scams in UPA regime May 22, 2017 06:38

Former Indian finance minister, P Chidambaram was giving a speech at an event, Indra Gandhi memorial program in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadi, when he smartly admitted to all the wrongdoings in the UPA government, indicating to the numerous scams that took place during the regime. “I am not denying that no wrongdoing happened. There is only one place where mistakes don’t happen, the place we finally reach,” said Chidambaram on Sunday afternoon. The following statement comes to heels of CBI raids on May 16. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted raids at 16 different locations, including the residence of Chidambaram and his son Karti. The raids were conducted in connection with criminal misconduct in grant of investment approval by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB). However, the Congress leader tried to turn the events by adding that the UPA government did many positive things in India during its rule. “Many positive things happened during the 10 years of Congress rule,” he said. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders did not miss the chance and took took a dig at the former minister’s statements. SG Suryah, who is the Vice President of the BJP youth wing in Tamil Nadu said: “All these statements being made by Chidarambam are out of panic and fear. This admission of wrongdoing is shocking.”   “It is alarming that he admitted to wrongdoing in the UPA regime in such a casual tone,” he added. Another BJP leader, GVL Narasimha Rao said that he was not surprised by Chidambaram’s statements. “Chidambaram is not making a revelation. Everyone knows about the corrupt practices that took place under Congress govt,” he said. Recently, Chidambaram became one of the most discussed topics in India, as CBI filed a FIR against his son on charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, receiving illegal gratification, influencing public servants and criminal misconduct. On Friday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a money laundering case against Karti on Friday. In his defense, Karti alleged that his only link to INX Media, which is owned by Indrani and Peter Mukherjee was that his friend was its auditor. “A friend of mine is the auditor of that television company and it is the only connection I have with that firm,” Karti said. Mumbai Indians clinched its third IPL trophy May 22, 2017 05:28

The Final match of the 10 edition of IPL took place in Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Hyderabad between bitter state rivals, Mumbai Indians who already had won the competition twice and first time finalists Rising Pune Supergiants. After disappointing play-off matches, cricket enthusiasts were excited for a grand clash. It was not just about the trophy. It was the pride that they were craving for as the team lost thrice this season to RPS, twice in front of its own home crowd at Wankhede. If RPS though that they would boss over two time champions Mumbai, they were in for a rude shock as MI skipper and Co stifled their chase with Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Johnson sounding their death knell with two splendid last overs that pinned them to 128/6. After beating Kolkata Knightriders to reach finals in 2nd qualifies, Mumbai Indians chose to bat first after winning the toss, the summit clash turned out to be a seat of the edge thriller. Both the teams went unchanged, but definitely the fortunes of Mumbai changed against a team that beat them thrice this season and despite posting the lowest total in an IPL final by a team batting first, Mumbai won the match by 1 run. In the first 15 overs Mumbai scored just 81 runs losing 8 wickets and in the next 30 balls they added 48 runs bringing the total to 129. it was apparent that Krunal Pandya (47 off 38balls) could have done some damage on RPS with some support from the top order that hit the self-destruct button a touch too soon. Bowlers Jaydev Unadkat and Washington Sundar were so brilliant that made it very difficult for Mumbai batsmen to get runs and they slowly perished to ordinary shots. Shardul Thakur came up with a blinder at deep midwicket to get rid of skipper Rohit Sharma and Manoj Tiwary made no mistake with Kieron Pollard's straightforward chance. RPS looked confident when its opening batsmen came to bat. It was a low total for a final match. But sometimes overconfidence can eat you up that is what happened to RPS last night. Rohit Sharma tightened the fielding position and bowlers constantly took out Pune Batsmen. Rahane scored 44 of 38 balls. He added 54 runs for the second wicket with Smith. But Mumbai were not done yet. Where Mumbai were 81 for seven after 15, Pune were 83 for two with five overs to go. MS Dhoni playing his seventh final failed to perform and Mumbai made a tight fist of it. Smith’s 51 off 50 balls took his team to the threshold but their inability to force the pace in the middle overs cost them dear as Mumbai closed in for the kill. Pune needed 30 from last three and 11 from the last over when Johnson struck twice to get rid of Tiwary and Smith. The task proved beyond the rest and Mumbai have reason to savor the best of their IPL triumphs. AMandeep

New Human Antibodies To Combat Ebola May 20, 2017 10:30

A team of Scientists which was led by the Indian-origin has discovered the natural human antibodies which can neutralise and also protect animals against from three virulent Ebola viruses. The new study can aid to discover vaccines against the deadly disease. The scientists have discovered the neutralising natural human antibodies in the blood of a survivor of the 2013-16 Ebola outbreak in the Western Africa. The outbreak caused the deaths of more than 11,000 people and infected over 29,000 people. The Ebola survivor’s blood was found to contain the remarkable antibodies which can block not only one strain of Ebola from infecting animal cells, but also all the five known strains of Ebola which are Zaire, Bundibugyo, Sudan, Reston and Tai Forest, said the researchers. The discovery and also characterisation of broadly neutralising human antibodies in the study is a major step toward a single therapy that could treat or prevent the infection caused by any known Ebola virus, said Kartik Chandran, a professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York. Previously, the monoclonal antibodies which bind to and neutralise the specific pathogens and toxins were emerged as one of the most promising treatments for Ebola patients. However, the therapy targetted at only one of the specific Ebola virus and failed to work against the others. As per the study which was published in the journal Cell, a team found that two of the 349 monoclonal antibodies, ADI-15878 and ADI-15742, from the survivor of Ebola virus, potently neutralised the infection by all five known Ebolaviruses in the tissue culture. The two new human antibodies which were discovered are capable of protecting the animals (mice and ferrets) which had been exposed to the lethal dosage of three major agents: Ebola virus, Sudan virus and also Bundibugyo virus. The new study has also pointed out that the human genes are the likely to become a major source of the immune cells which produce the two antibodies to combat Ebola. "We'd like to synthesise vaccine immunogens [proteins that trigger antibody production] that can elicit the same types of broadly protective antibodies in people," added Chandran. Firefighters battling Fire faced another threat in Connecticut May 20, 2017 10:22

Firefighter crew were battling a brush fire near the Appalachian Trail in the western Connecticut, when they came across another threat - rattlesnakes. According to reports, the blaze burned about 200 acres of rugged terrain of Schaghticoke Mountain in Kent. Chief Alan Gawel of Kent Volunteer Fire said the fire disturbed dens of the timber rattlers and dozens of snakes were spotted fleeing the heat, including one that slithered between the legs of a crew member on Thursday. "As you are trying to create a fire line in the rocks, boom, there's a snake," he said. "It's a real battle, not to mention what it does to your nerves." At least 17 fire department crew members battled to control the fire and one had been bitten. Authorities alerted the nearby hospitals to make sure that they have anti-venom. Because the it was a wilderness fire, and the firefighters were not wearing typical heavy turnout gear and had no protection from snake strikes. A spokesperson for the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Dennis Schain said that while there is a large population of snakes in the region, they typically steer clear of humans, but would pose a danger if someone stepped on or made to feel threatened. "They have been in these pockets of Connecticut for a long time, and hardly anybody ever sees them," he said. Once the fire is controlled, the state wildlife experts will go in looking to rescue any injured snakes. The injured snakes then would be brought to the Roger Williams Zoo in Rhode Island to be rehabilitated. He added that the fire should not pose any permanent threat to the snake population in the region. As Connecticut ins home to just two venomous types snakes. The timber rattlesnake and the northern copperhead. Unemployment rate in Connecticut inches up AMandeep

Mumbai Indians overthrows Kolkata Riders to reach Finals May 20, 2017 05:18

This season’s play-offs have ended and the two teams remaining in one of the biggest league’s in the world, Rising Pune Supergiants will face Mumbai Indians on Sunday at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Hyderabad. It is certain that neutral fans did not get much from the play-offs. On other hand fans of the winning team are all happy. But the three of the matches did not stand to the standards of the league. In the first play-off Rising Pune Supergiants thrashed Mumbai Indians. In the eliminators Sunrisers Hyderabad were unfortunate as the rain halted the match for hours and Kolkata Knight Riders ended winning the match with the Duckworth-Lewis method (DLS). Even the final play-off between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knightriders at Bengaluru was not much exciting, as KKR only managed for a very low score 111/10. The score was disappointing, especially at this point of the match. The team lost all its wickets within 18.5 wickets. A score of 107 is not much to defend or chase, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma (26 off 24 balls) finally managed to score. He was supported by Krunal Pandya (45* off 30 balls). Their partnership ensured the chase was completed without much fuss on a wet field. After messing up their first chance to enter the finals with a loss at Wankhede to Pune, MI men got everything right, including the toss, as they chased down the below par total in 14.3 overs. Although Mumbai had the upper hand for most of the part in the match, they did wobble a little, as they lost 3 wickets at the score of 36 in 6 overs. But once Rohit and Krunal settled down, the march was well out of Kolkata’s reach. It was about 12 nights ago at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, when the crowd witnessed the might of Sunil Narine and Lynn. The 105 off 37 balls was still a fresh memory as the duo came out t bat. But this time KKR did not feast on runs. Instead Mumbai bowlers overwhelmingly outmatched them. KKR were completely overshadowed by the meticulous Mumbai bowlers, who breezed through the batting line-up. Jasprit Bumrah kept the batters guessing with his variation of good length balls and peppered it with yorkers and short balls. He even ensured the last over of powerplay was a maiden over with Robin Uthappa's wicket as the incentive. AMandeep
