Connecticut’s population dips by thousands May 26, 2017 09:18

The U.S. States Census Bureau released Connecticut numbers this week that shows the state’s population has been declining over the year. ith more than 3.5 million people in the state, basically every city in the state lost population over the last year. One city in New Haven County and and three in Fairfield County were the exception in the list. The study confirms that Connecticut is loosing population and has lost about 20,000 residents over the last three years. From 2015 to 2016, the state lost over 8,000 residents. Even with its vibrant downtown, New Haven failed to show any population growth and dropped slightly below 130,000 residents for the first time since 2010. New Haven Mayor Toni Harp said: “I am sure by the time they do the real census, when the real count is taken that we’ll be well over 130,000.” The officials of the New Haven are not worried about the short-term estimates, as their eyes are fixed for the long term plans for downtown and surroundings neighborhoods for growth. “We have on tap over next two years 2,000 market level apartments and we have the new colleges at Yale,” Harp said. The only city that is growing in New Haven County is Milford. It has a population just over 52,000 and added more than 400 people last year. Milford Mayor Ben Blake said: “Really we are going through this economic renaissance where over the last three years we’ve had a 26% increase of new business starts.” Those new business helped in contribution to $100 million in new construction last year. The growth in businesses actually helped to cut taxes over the last two year, Mayor Blake said. “It is allowing us to expand our grand list,” Blake said. “And when our tax base swells, we’re able to keep taxes down.” The official census numbers are released once in every ten years, but the bureau configures population estimates once in a year based on a number of factors. Stamford, Danbury and Norwalk, were the other large cities in Connecticut that added population. New Born Baby found behind Grocery Store in Danbury AMandeep

Indian embassies around the world to mark International Day of Yoga May 25, 2017 12:58

As the International Day of Yoga (IDY) is on 21st June, the Narendra Modi government has launched extensive preparations to mark the third IDY at a much greater scale than previous two years, Particularly in North America, Europe and China. This year’s celebration is not just to spread awareness about India’s civilization ethos and strengthen the country’s soft diplomacy. But to put a check to the cultural appropriation of the ancient Indian practice by what is termed ‘western Yoga’. The ‘western Yoga’, is gaining immense popularity in the western nation and does not acknowledge the significance that Yoga has with the ancient Indian culture. The western Yoga also focuses only on mere physical exercises that are bereft of yoga’s meditation and spiritual essence. The United Nations General Assembly designated 21st June as the International Day of Yoga at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s imitative. The Indian Embassies and consulates in North & South America, Europe, Australia and China are leading the way to hold month longs Yoga events that have already started and will go on till the third week of June. In 2015 and 2016 the IDY was marked as a daylong event. Indian Embassy and consulates in the United States have partnered with local Indian cultural organization to make the event a success. The Indian Embassy in Washington D.C., has partnered with the “Friends of Yoga,” which is a group of organization that include Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS), the overseas arm of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev’s Isha Foundation, Art of Living Foundation of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Brahma Kumaris, Swami Ramdev’s Patanjali, Hindu American Foundation, Association of United Hindu and Jain Temples, Gayatri Pariwar and other Indian community organizations. The HSS greatly supported the holding of Yoga day in 2015 and 2016, but this is the first time where the Indian Embassy has brought HSS and Patanjali on board as “officials partners” on its dedicated website for the event at dcyogaday.org A spokesperson for RSS in Delhi said that  the Indian embassies will routinely invite Indian cultural outfits to help hold events and celebrate Indian festivals. In January, the United States House of Representatives took note of the HSS’ annual ‘Surya Namaskar Yajna’ or ‘Health for Humanity Yogathon’, which the HSS holds as part of its annual Makar Sankranti celebrations. Not only in the United States, but across the world Indian embassies have collaborated with city authorities to hold Yoga day celebrations. In D.C., the event will be held on June 21 at National Mall. In Chicago, a preparatory Yoga event was held on May 17 and the consulate will hold the main event on June 24. In the capital of Spain, Madrid the event will be held on June 18 and in France capital, Paris on June 17. While in Germany Capital, Berlin on 21 June. In India, PM Modi will mark the event with 55,000 people in Lucknow on June 21. The central government is making detailed plans to have senior ministers perform Yoga in key state capitals. In China, more than thousand people took part in a Yoga event on Saturday in Wuyi, Zhejiang province. According to the Indian consulate, the event was organized along with the People’s Government of Wuyi County. Wuyi’s mayor said at the event that just as Buddhism had bound the civilizations of India and China together, Yoga also has the potential to promote values of harmony and peace between the two nations. The Indian embassy in Beijing will be organizing several yoga events across the country over the next one month. The chief of HSS, Ved Nanda has sent out an appeal to the Indian community to make the Yoga day a success. He said that the International Day of Yoga is an opportunity where “we can give back to our karmabhoomi (US) the best part of our collective inheritance –Yoga.” He also stressed on the spiritual aspects of Yoga “As you know, Yoga is not a mere tool for physical fitness but more importantly is a beacon for individual’s upliftment,” he said. He said the Yoga Day events will involve all regardless of their race, faith, gender, nationality or any other similar barrier. Whereas in India, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has encouraging young people for month-long internship program for media and publicity related work for the Yoga day. New Born Baby found behind Grocery Store in Danbury May 25, 2017 10:46

The Danbury Police Department said that a new born baby was found behind a grocery store on Sunday night and officers are looking for the mother. Polcie said that they received a report about a baby found near a grocery store on Main Street at around 11:40 PM. The caller directed the police officers to the back of the Zaytuna Grocery Store, at 397 Main St. The first responders found the baby wrapped in several pieces of women clothing. Medical personnel evaluated that the baby was a boy, who was then taken to the neonatal care unit at Danbury hospital were he was treated. Officers returned to the scene on Wednesday and their investigation is still in full swing. Investigators stopped at Abdul Waheed’s Fish and Chips Shop. "The detectives were here looking for video footage from that side of the camera, but they couldn't find anything because the range of the camera is 30 feet only," Waheed said. The mother could have handed over the baby at the hospital, under Connecticut’s Safe Haven Law. According to the law newborn babies can be handed over at emergency rooms within 30 days of birth without the mother facing charges of abandonment. Back in the neighborhood, news about the troubling discovery is spreading. "It's just terrible, we raised four kids, we love our kids," a neighbor said. "How can someone just throw a kid on the street? It's just terrible." The Danbury Poice Department said in a statement that it is concerned the baby’s mother may need medical treatment or other services, which is why officers are attempting to locate her. Anyone with information on the newborn or his mother are urged to call police at (203) 797-4662 or (203) 790-TIPS. Meet Milk sued over Connecticut Concert Shootings AMandeep

Meek Mill sued over Connecticut concert shootings May 24, 2017 12:37

Hip Hop artist, Meek Mill has got into legal troubles. The Philly rapper is being accused by the families of a deadly concert shooting in Connecticut. The deadly shooting took place in December last year at the Toyota Oakdale Theater where Meek Mill was performing on stage. In the incident four fans were shot dead and two died later, One of the victim’s family along with one injured person filed a lawsuit against Meek Mill and Oakdale claiming that the Dreamchasers rapper’s lyrics incite violence. The family of the deceased person identified as 31-year-old Travis Ward blamed that the shooting squarely at the feet of Meek Mill and Oakdale. According to the court documents, the family blamed that his lyrics attracted violent thugs to the concert and the owners of Oakdale are aware of that, but they still booked him for the concert. Ward’s family argued that Oakdale should have taken the rapper’s lyrics as a warning not to book him for the show. The family is now suing Mill and the organizers for more than $15,000 in damages. The lawsuit claims that necessary measures were not taken to control the crowd and ensure the safety of fans, citing past gun violence at Meek Mill concerts as a reason for extra security. “With song titles like ‘Body Count’ and ‘Ooh Kill ‘Em’ that praise indiscriminate killing and mayhem, the potential for tragic incidents like this should have been properly anticipated and planned for by Meek Mill, his concert promoters and the Oakdale Theatre,” attorney Joel Faxon said. The lawsuit is reportedly seeking more than $15,000 in damages. Pitchfork has reached out to Meek Mill’s representatives for comment. Meek Mill has not reacted to the lawsuit, but you can bet that he has already lawyered up. Bay Area tightened security measure following Manchester bombing AMandeep
