Women use social media for campaigns

The social networking sites, whose main purpose was to act as bridge between people to exchange hi and bye, are now turning to be great platforms in bringing people with same ideas at one place for raising voices against the evils in the society.

Recently, a few women in Gurgoan made use of Facebook to highlight the women insecurity in the city and called for a protest in a unique way.

The communication expert, Richa Dubey was one of the main personalities who kick started the campaign—Gurgoan Girlcott—that evoked good response from the people in the city.

The campaign’s main motive was to highlight the women problems and the insecurity to women at shopping malls and other public places. Gurgoan Girlcott—which started as a page on the Facebook—asked the people in the city to boycott shopping malls this weekend. People started liking it and spreading the news and the result—thousands of women and men boycotted  shopping. Later, all those who took part in the campaign gathered on roads on the concluding day and raised slogans in support of women security. According to Dubey, the police are unable to provide security to women. She cited a statement of the city police that asked women not to stay at offices after eight in the night. In that case, women should not even go to shopping malls, she said.  While the shopping mall owners said that campaign had a little impact, the campaigners claimed that it was successful.

All in all, it is good that people are using the social media to highlight the problems in the society. Thanks to the Facebook!(phani)
