On Wednesday, WhatsApp shared details about various new functions designed to enhance how users communicate and share in group conversations. The messaging service, owned by Meta, is introducing member tags, which users can attach to their names to give more details about them. Users can also convert any word they write into a sticker with the new text stickers feature. Additionally, WhatsApp has launched event reminders for people invited to events. Users within group chats can assign themselves a tag revealing their position, according to a blog update from the company. Each group can customize member tags as well. For instance, someone might be referred to as “Anna's Dad” in one group but as “Goalkeeper” in another. The company mentioned that this feature is being made available slowly.

Another addition to WhatsApp is text stickers. This feature lets users change a word into a sticker simply by entering it in the Sticker Search bar. The freshly made text stickers can either be included in sticker packs right away or sent in a chat first, depending on what users prefer.

Moreover, the third new feature is event reminders. Users can set personalized early notifications for guests when they make and send an event in a group chat. According to the company, this is meant to assist everyone in remembering to attend the user's party or join the call on time, depending on the event. The app already lets users set up events, keep them visible, gather RSVPs, and share updates in one spot. WhatsApp pointed out that these three new features add to significant improvements made in group chats over the past few years, such as sharing large files up to 2GB, HD media, screen sharing, and voice chats. The messaging app is also preparing to introduce several new features in 2026. Expected updates include usernames on WhatsApp, a tool for clearing chat history to free up storage, a stronger account protection mode for better security, and a mention @all option in group chats.
