Train derailed in New Britain, no injuries reported

A train derailed in New Britain, outside of a shopping plaza at 150 Columbus Blvd. No injuries were reported, authorities said.

New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart tweeted, the derailment happened on the train tracks near Columbus Boulevard and that she was heading to the scene.

A dispatcher said the train was operating on freight line and was not a passenger-carrying train. Stewart says the train appeared to be hauling construction debris. Seven cars were tipped over and an eighth was teetering.

According to the police, the incident, involving a Pan Am Railways freight train took place around 3:45 p.m. late Tuesday afternoon and that the cause remains under investigation.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection sent a response team to the scene. They were assessing the contents of the train cars, but said it does not appear to be hazardous materials.
