OnePlus might be planning significant updates to the screens in its upcoming top-end smartphones, based on a recent leak. The new information reveals details about the company's long-term plan for displays and indicates that it may keep focusing more on one aspect of display technology rather than just aiming for higher resolutions. This news comes amid rumors of the anticipated OnePlus 16 becoming visible online. OnePlus is likely to unveil its next main phone later this year, featuring multiple hardware improvements. According to a Weibo message from tipster Digital Chat Station (translated from Chinese), OnePlus is working on its future flagship display plans that will emphasize higher refresh rates. The tipster indicated that future versions might advance through 165Hz and 185Hz displays before potentially reaching 240Hz. Currently, OnePlus prefers 1.5K screens for its next-generation devices. The tipster mentioned that the company might reconsider using 2K displays if they can support much higher refresh rates without significant drawbacks.
Recent news has also suggested display enhancements for the upcoming OnePlus 16. This phone is expected to take over from the OnePlus 15, which features a 1.5K OLED screen and a refresh rate of 165Hz. Leaks show that the new model might boost the refresh rate to 185Hz while keeping a similar resolution. A 240Hz display would position OnePlus among the brands that are advancing smartphone display technology the furthest. Still, it is uncertain if the company can match this refresh rate with a 2K display without impacting battery life and performance. This change is anticipated to show a broader trend in the smartphone industry, where brands are increasingly prioritizing faster screens for their premium models. For everyday use, a 120Hz display is generally smooth enough for most users. The benefits of higher refresh rates are more noticeable in compatible games and fast-paced content. The OnePlus 16 is expected to launch later this year with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 processor and a sizable silicon-carbon battery, although OnePlus has not yet confirmed any specifics.
